Romans 8:13

Watermark 1809. 'For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye live through the spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.' Theme: Eternal Life. Describes the importance in knowing out. State before God and what it will be in the eternal world. Considers the 'truths' as a carnal love terminating in everlasting misery and a life of mortification and self-denial terminating in everlasting happiness. Concludes with a recommendation to improve the present state.

Luke 12:16-18

Watermark 1808. 'And he spake a parable unto them, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully...' Theme: Sharing Belief. Describes the belief that those who are interested in religion should teach the way of Salvation. Observes in relation to the parable that God invites us to partake of the Blessings of the Gospel and they are rejected with frivolous excuses. Concludes with an address to those who do not accept the Gospel.

Romans 6:23

Watermark 1818. 'For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.' Theme: The Gift of Eternal Life or distribution of rewards and punishments. Considers man's descent and God's mercy. Concludes that sin results in a death of everlasting misery and the godly life one of everlasting happiness. 10 pp., 2pp. appear to be a continuation of the sermon, 3pp. are a repetition of the beginning of this sermon, possibly added later.

Mark 2:8-12

'And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves...' Theme: The Benevolence of Christ. Considers the authority he exercised and his vindication of it. Believes we should be thankful for any affliction that brings us to Jesus and that it is possible to intercede with God on behalf of ungodly friends.

Revelation 20:11-15

'...and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books...'Theme: Judgement Day. Considers the appearance of the Judge, the persons who shall be judged and the Rule of Judgement when the sentence shall be executed. Concludes with a warning to be aware because all shall be judged.

Lamentations 3:27-29

Watermark 1800. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth...' Theme: Afflictions. Proposes to show the benefit of early afflictions by considering the general view and the view mentioned in the text. Concludes with an address to those who have experienced no particular afflictions.

Ecclesiastes 7:16

Watermark 1829. 'Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: Why shouldest thou destroy thyself?' Theme: Moderation. Refers to those who have little concern for religion and those who die before their time. Explains the caution that the text implies. (See no. 79 for complete sermon).

Matthew 25:35-40

'For I was enhungred, and ye gave me meat...' Theme: Charity. Explains the need to take into account principles, conduct and activity in doing good. Considers the proper exercises of Christian Benevolence, their acceptability to Jesus and their importance to ourselves. Urges the congregation to show benevolence and compassion to a charity collection for the Benevolent Asylum.

Luke 8:50

'But when Jesus heard it, he answered Him, saying, Fear not: believe only and she shall be made whole.' Theme: Belief rewarded. Considers the rulers faith, how it was tried, operated and rewarded. Concludes that everyone must expect trouble so let it drive them to Jesus.

Isaiah 55:6

'Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.' Theme: Insensibility toward eternal things. Observes there is reason to fear that God is absent for most people and we cannot hope to find God if we do not seek him. Urges those who are 'afflicted' and those who are advanced in life to seek God.
