Historia biográfica

John Stoward Moyes was born in 1884. He graduated from the Australian College of Theology in 1907 and was ordained Priest in 1908. From 1918-1920 he was Chaplain to the Commonwealth Forces, becoming Bishop of Armidale in 1929, a position he held until 1964. In 1943 he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity from Trinity College, Toronto, Canada.

Historia biográfica

Francis James was a journalist and publisher. He served in World War 2 with the Royal Air Force, was shot down over France in 1942, and spent time in German POW camps. In 1945 he was invalided out of the RAF and married Joyce Staff. In 1950 he worked for the Sydney Morning Herald, before becoming managing director of 'The Anglican' newspaper in 1952. In 1957 James established the Anglican Press Ltd., which went into receivership in 1960 and was taken over by Australian Consolidated Press. In 1969 he travelled to China and was imprisoned for spying, remaining in prison until 1970 when he was released, thanks to lobbying by his friend Gough Whitlam, who was Australian Prime Minister at the time.

The series includes correspondence between Bishop Moyes and Francis James in his capacity as managing director of 'The Anglican' newspaper. The correspondence also discusses the management of the Anglican Press Ltd., of which Moyes was a shareholder. Also includes correspondence relating to Archbishop H.W.K. Mowll's visit to China in 1956, and discussing how this visit was reported in the Daily Telegraph.
