Now called the Reformed Evangelical Anglican Church of South Africa, it is not recognised by the Anglican Communion but maintains strong links with the Diocese of Sydney. The established Church of the Province of South Africa was formed in 1870. In 1938, with help and advice from Archbishop H.W.K. Mowll, the Church of England in South Africa adopted a federal Constitution. In practice the Church is organised as one Diocese with a Bishop and Area or Assistant Bishops. Bishop Stephen Bradley was an Australian who came to South Africa in the 1930s and was Presiding Bishop from 1965-1984.

The Most Rev. Wm. Saumarez Smith encouraged the Sunday School teachers of the diocese to form an association. The inaugural meeting of the SSTA was held on January 29 1909, at St Mark's, Granville, with the Rev. A.E.J. Ross acting as chairman. This was closely followed by the first SSTA Conference which was held on the February 17 1909, at St John's, Parramatta, presided over by the Ven. Archdeacon Gunther. The first committee consisted of the Rev. A.E.J. Ross, Mr W.P. Noller and G.H. Lewis, with Mr LC Colman as Hon. Secretary. The association gradually grew and from 1929 has been associated with the Diocesan Board of Education which assisted with teacher training and kindergarten instruction.

The Church of England Historical Society in the Diocese of Sydney was formed in 1955 after an exhibition of items held by the Royal Australian Historical Society was held at St Stephen's Church, Newtown. The inaugural meeting was held at St Stephen's Rectory on November 4th, 1955, with Archbishop H.W.K. Mowll as Patron and President. The Journal commenced publication the following year. The name was changed to the Anglican Historical Society in 1999 to reflect the change in name of the Anglican Church of Australia.

The college was founded in 1989, the product of the vision of Bishops Dudley Foord and Joe Bell, successive presiding bishops of the Church of England in Southern Africa. David Broughton Knox came to South Africa – from Sydney, Australia – in 1989 to establish George Whitefield College and be its first principal. GWC began its life in a cluster of houses in Kalk Bay close to the long-established Bible Institute of South Africa. In 1997 GWC became affiliated with Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, now known as North-West University. In 1998 the college moved to a new campus in Muizenberg, where it has been able to consolidate and expand. In 2010 GWC achieved full registration with the SA Dept of Education as a private higher education institute with its own accredited degree (Bachelor in Theology) and certificate courses (Certificate in Theology). St Andrew's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, consecrated in 1868. It was designed by Edmund Blacket in the Gothic Revival style. St Andrew's Cathedral School was founded in 1885, and there is a choir of men and boys which sings at Sunday services and weekday evensong. There is also a healing service and Bible studies. The building has heritage listing with the National Trust of Australia.

The Church Record was formed in 1912 with the aim of publishing a federal church paper. It took over publication of 'The Church Record' which had commenced publication in 1880, and in 1912 incorporated the 'Victorian Churchman'. It was re-formed in 1944 in order to further the work of the Church of England in Australia. In 1979 the company name was changed to Australian Church Record Ltd.

The Diocese of Australia was divided into four dioceses: Sydney, Adelaide, Newcastle and Melbourne, by letters patent in 1847. The diocese has been led by an archbishop since 1897.
