'Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.' Theme: Duty to religion. Determines what is the old and good way spoken of, our duty in respecting it and the encouragement given to perform this duty. Concludes with a warning not to neglect religion because time is short.

'For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.' Theme: Spirituality vs Carnality. Discusses the difference between the carnal and spiritual mind by considering their operations and effects. Concludes with an address to both the carnal and spiritual persons.

'...this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the Lord. Theme: The approachment of death and judgement. Shows that we must all die and nothing can secure us against death. Concludes with an entreaty for those who do not believe in the Sentence of Death to reflect upon their ruined state.

'And the Angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people...'Theme: Birth of Christ. Illustrates that the news of a Saviour's Birth may be called good tidings of great joy and points out to whom they will be of great joy. Concludes that this is dependent upon what foundation we stand for eternity and how we view our sin and danger.

Considers the analogy between Christ's miracles and spiritual blessings and how this relates to what will be done with our deceased souls, and endeavours to improve on the text to illustrate the direction that should betaken. Concludes with a reference to the state of those who touched him.
