1 Kings 21:20

'And Ahab said to Elijah: Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.' Theme: Sin and Repentance. Shows how greedily men commit sin, how indignantly they take reproof and how certainly they ruin their souls. Advises on repentance and reformation.

Romans 1:20-21

Watermark 1829. 'For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being, understood by things that are made...they glorified him not as God...' Theme: Ungodliness. Considers the state of the Gentiles who the judgements of God are denounced against by showing how inexcusable their conduct was and ours is if we resemble them. Addresses professing Christians.

Micah 7:18-20

'Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy...' Theme: Forgiveness. Considers the divine mercy of God towards sinners, in its rise, progress and consummation. Concludes with an exposition on the fate of those who do not believe in God.

Matthew 18:32-35 and Luke 16:8

(1) Matthew 18:32-35 'Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thou all that left...' Theme: Duty of forgiveness. Considers the extent, reasonableness and necessity of Christian forgiveness.
(2) Luke 16:8' And the lord commended the unjust steward because he had done wisely; for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.' Theme: Belief. Considers the wisdom of the unjust steward and the folly of God's children. Advises the congregation to choose God as Lord and Master.

1 Corinthians 6:11

'And such were some of you: but ye are washed...in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.' Theme: Benefits of Christianity. Shows the state of the Corinthians before the Gospel was received, and the change they underwent in the preaching of the Gospel. Applies the sins of the Corinthians to the colonies' situation.

Hebrews 4:9

Watermark 1808. 'There remaineth therefore a rest to the People of God.' Theme: The Privileges of Christianity. Points out who the people of God are and what the 'rest' is that remains for them. Concludes it is desirable to be among God's people.

Isaiah 55:6

'Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.' Theme: Seeking of God. An extension of no. 70 with an addition considering that there is a time coming when God will not be found so we should seek him now. Applies this to the young and the afflicted.

Psalm 42:5

'Why art thou cast down, O my Soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.' Theme: The Christian State of Probation. Points out the sources of a Christians disquietness and its remedy. Compares those who sin as the children of the devil and those who strive against sin as the children of God. Warns those cast down to read the promises of God.

Mark 10:49-50

'...And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise, he calleth thee...' Theme: Blessings from God. Considers the state of the person whom Jesus called, the encouragement which the call gave him and its effect. Concludes with assurances to those who seek the Lord.

Luke 11:21-22

Watermark 1815. 'When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace...' Theme: The Lord's Miracles. Explains the parable in Mark 13:18-22. Discusses the state of men who believe all miracles are the result of superstitious beliefs. Concludes with an exposition on the duty of those who are converted to God.
