1 Thessalonians 5:8

'But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.' Theme: Believers. Considers the description given of Believers, the exhortation addressed to God and the particular directions that accompany it. Refers to a person released from hospital as returning to the old ways and dying of a bowel complaint, and as having lost his soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

'And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray to God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blame-less unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ...' Theme: Spiritual Preservation. Refers to parents desire for security of their children and considers the spiritual parent will be rewarded provided the children behave. Discusses the blessing desired and the assurance given of our being preserved. Encourages people to set forth their Christianity.

Romans 13:11

'And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.' Theme: Self-examination. Considers self-examination as largely ignored by people even though it is necessary to prepare for the Eternal State. Stresses the plight of the disbeliever with reference to the fate of fellow criminals and responsibility for their destruction.

Luke 2:32-35

'...Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel...'Theme: Love of Christ. Considers Christ's exhibition to the world and the more immediate end to encourage and promote an increased awareness of Christ's sufferings and acknowledgement of his love.

Job 19:25-27

Watermark 1813. 'For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.' Theme: Christ's redemption of the congregation. Considers Christ's confession and the lessons to be learned from it. Observes that the knowledge of Christ will provide hope, support and comfort.

1 Peter 4:12-16

'Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you...' Theme: Trials. Considers the various trials that should be expected by everyone by showing in what light we should view trials, the reason why they should be viewed in that light and what we should guard against in relation to it. Concludes with a warning to those who neglect God's mercy.

Hebrews 1:6

Watermark 1803. 'And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.' Theme: Divine worship of God. Observes that the testimonies of God have given confirmation of every fundamental doctrine of the holy religion. Discusses how Christ is a proper object of divine worship and that his Incarnation affords a special call to worship him. Urges people to welcome Christ and submit to his government.

Job 27:6

Watermark 1824. '...My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.' Theme: Conscience. Considers the proper office of conscience, our duty to our conscience, and shows how we should obey what it dictates. Concludes with the cautions that we should guard against an evil, guilty, confident and unfeeling conscience.

1 John 3:20-21

Watermark 1809. 'For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things...' Theme: The day of Judgement. Considers how far the testimonies of our conscience maybe depended upon and the benefit and comfort in having the testimony in our favour. Concludes with a warning to take care of the conduct and conscience.

Luke 11:27-28

Watermark 1809. 'And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice...' Theme: The true Christian. Analyses the character of the true Christian and his blessedness in relation to the text. Concludes with an address to those who hear the word of God and do not keep it, and to those who do keep it.
