The photograph was taken around the time of David's graduation from Moore College. His brother Robert graduated in 1898. Both men graduated with first class honours in the Oxford and Cambridge Preliminary Examinations, introduced by Nathaniel Jones.

Thomas Kemmis was one of the first three students at Moore College Liverpool and graduated in 1858. He was a Canon of St Andrews Cathedral 1884-1897.
