Psalm 42:5

'Why art thou cast down, O my Soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.' Theme: The Christian State of Probation. Points out the sources of a Christians disquietness and its remedy. Compares those who sin as the children of the devil and those who strive against sin as the children of God. Warns those cast down to read the promises of God.

Efficiency of prayer

Watermark 1808. Sermon reference missing. Theme: Efficiency of Prayer. Discusses the improvement suggested by God through instruction and reproof.

Psalm 18:27-28

'God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light...' Theme: Sacrifices to God. Describes the method by which the congregation should surrender themselves to God because faith will ease suffering and ensure a peaceful after life. Uses the words of David to convey the greatness of God.

Psalm 9:17

Paper has watermark 1796. 'The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. 'Theme: Consequences of sinfulness. Outlines who the wicked are and what is to be their final doom. Highlights the consequences of indifference toward eternal interests.

Forgiveness in Christ

Theme: Forgiveness of sin. Considers how man is full of sin, and the means of deliverance from sin, i.e. how it may be forgiven, subdued and taken away by God.

Matthew 23:37

'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!' Theme: God's treatment of the faithful. Considers Christ's compassion and warning against sin by his Providence and words, and the obstinancy of man in accepting false refuges and preferring temporal and carnal pleasures to spiritual and eternal ones. Exhorts the congregation to accept Christ before it is too late.

Luke 19:12-13

'He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return...' Theme: The Nobleman's neglect. Refers to noblemen as desiring earthly grandeur whilst neglecting important ends and purposes in life. Discusses the questions: Has Christ given some talent to improve? What improvement has been made? What excuse is there for neglecting to improve them?

1 Peter 4:7

'But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.' Theme: Sobriety. Discusses the duty associated with sobriety and the reason for it as being that the end of all things is at hand. A sermon for the New Year.

Luke 2:10-11

'And the Angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people...' Theme: The Birth of Christ. Endeavours to elucidate the Tidings announced and consider their importance. A Christmas sermon with an exhortation to break from sinful ways for this may be the last Christmas.
