Job 34:29

Watermark 1829. 'When he giveth quietness who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him...' Theme: Comfort of God. Observes that none can trouble those whom God comforts and none can comfort those whom he troubles. Addresses those who enjoy the comfort of God.

John 1:18

Watermark 1815. 'No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he bath declared him.' Theme: God, the Father. Inquires as to what Christ declared of the Father and how he declared him. Concludes with an address to those who are ignorant of God.

John 14:13

'And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son!' Theme: Prayer. Interprets the Gospel as an address to the disciples and everyone else. Determines to what extent Jesus will answer prayer and for what end he will answer the prayer. Concludes with the inference that some appear to embrace God and Jesus but their lives do not correspond with this. Warns of the time when religion will be tried.
