This medallion was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII to celebrate the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. On one side, the bust of the Pope with the words "Gregorivs XIII Pont. Max. An. I". On the other side, is a depiction of the massacre featuring an angel holding a sword and cross, with the words "Ugnottorum Strages" (Overthrow of the Huguenots).
