1 Kings 21:20

'And Ahab said to Elijah: Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord.' Theme: Sin and Repentance. Shows how greedily men commit sin, how indignantly they take reproof and how certainly they ruin their souls. Advises on repentance and reformation.

1 Peter 1:3-5

Watermark 1815. 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which, according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again...' Theme: Redemption. Considers the causes of regeneration as a spiritual and supernatural change of heart and the security of the regenerate. Refers to the happiness of God's people and future happiness in the world to come. Cautions those not begotten again to hope.

1 Peter 4:12-16

'Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you...' Theme: Trials. Considers the various trials that should be expected by everyone by showing in what light we should view trials, the reason why they should be viewed in that light and what we should guard against in relation to it. Concludes with a warning to those who neglect God's mercy.

Refers to the sins of Eli. Observes and elaborates upon the dispersing of Justice by qualified and authorized Persons. Considers it necessary along with Magistrates and Judges for Government. Justifies its existence by drawing a parallel with the formation of Israel. Concludes with a warning about the approaching day of Judgement and the state of Souls.
