Refers to those who have little concern for religion and those who die before their time. Explains the caution that the text implies. (See no. 79 for complete sermon).

'Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself overwise: Why shouldest thou destroy thyself?' Theme: Moderate righteousness. Discusses the meaning of the passage, explains the caution and recommends the people to attend to the caution and be righteous. Warns those who make profane use of this passage not to carry the test too far.

2 Timothy 3:12

Watermark 1808. 'All that will live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer Persecution.' Theme: Trials of the righteous. Considers the Apostle St Paul and St Peter's assumptions on the topic, and the inference St Paul draws from it. Concludes with a warning to the ungodly that God is with them every day.

1 Thessalonians 5:8

'But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.' Theme: Believers. Considers the description given of Believers, the exhortation addressed to God and the particular directions that accompany it. Refers to a person released from hospital as returning to the old ways and dying of a bowel complaint, and as having lost his soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

'And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray to God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blame-less unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ...' Theme: Spiritual Preservation. Refers to parents desire for security of their children and considers the spiritual parent will be rewarded provided the children behave. Discusses the blessing desired and the assurance given of our being preserved. Encourages people to set forth their Christianity.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

'But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope...' Theme: Judgement Day. Discusses the declarations in relation to the certainty of Resurrection, the order in which it will be effected and the blessedness of this day to the saints. Concludes with an entreaty for non-believers to pray to God and be aware of the danger on the day of Judgement.

1 Samuel 2:25

Watermark 1797. 'If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat for him...' Theme: The Ungodly men and Justice. Refers to the sins of Eli. Observes and elaborates upon the dispersing of Justice by qualified and authorized Persons. Considers it necessary along with Magistrates and Judges for Government. Justifies its existence by drawing a parallel with the formation of Israel. Concludes with a warning about the approaching day of Judgement and the state of Souls.

1 Peter 4:7

'But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.' Theme: Sobriety. Discusses the duty associated with sobriety and the reason for it as being that the end of all things is at hand. A sermon for the New Year.
