Correspondence from Matthias Media
The correspondence confirms the publishing relationship established between Chapman and Matthias Media for the republication of his popular work, Know and Tell the Gospel. The correspondence also reveals that the republished material was intended to address the growing discussion surrounding 1) the identity of the evangelist, 2) the supportive roles played by congregation members in the evangelistic process, and 3) the breadth of the Christian’s responsibility/involvement in evangelism.
Dept. of Evangelism: Communicating Christ
This documentation provides a six-week training course (undated) from the Department of Evangelism on evangelistic preaching, outlining similar content to the more fully developed material later set out in Chapman’s work, Setting Hearts on Fire. It highlights Chapman’s emphasis on all preaching as being evangelistic, the content of the Christian gospel, the preparation of an evangelistic talk, the packaging of a talk including introductions, conclusions, and illustrations, as well as the theology and sociology of calling for response and follow-up.
A profile of Chapman detailing the broad coordinates of his ministry.
A lay leader at communion, Church Scene, Dec 14 1978, p. 9
The article relates a discussion between Chapman and Gerald Davis in 1978. It reveals Chapman’s developing views on ordination and the sacraments. It also gives Chapman’s rationale for some of the wider views on evangelism that had become popular in the 1970s.
This documentation provides the course outline indicating the percentage of teaching hours devoted to the theology and practice of evangelism, as well as the development of personal and evangelistic preaching competency. It notes Chapman's recommended readings on evangelism, including the works of some of Chapman's own students and colleagues.
