Inaugurated in 1891 in St Marys, Balmain. The name 'Bethany' was used in the early years but the official title was approximately The Church of England Deaconess Institution Sydney Limited. Incorporated as Anglican Deaconess Institution Limited (ADSIL) in 1996, the Institution adopted a CEO and a more corporate and independent constitution in 2008, and was renamed Anglican Deaconess Ministries Limited in 2011

Department of Evangelism

In 1914, the first Diocesan Missioner was appointed. In 1927, the Board of Diocesan Mission was established. Department of External Studies

The Department of External Studies was set up in order to administer the Preliminary Theological Certificate Course, for laypeople who wanted to study a short theological course by correspondence. Evening courses and the Diploma of Biblical Studies were also offered. The department also coordinated the annual School of Theology seminars. In 2016 the operations of Moore Distance were taken over by the Registrar's Department.

Diocesan Library

(a) Assisting the acquisition establishment and maintenance of Schools.
(b) Providing for the official recognition of Schools as Church of England Schools. ,
(c) Encouraging Conferences with and amongst the governing bodies of existing Schools.
(d) Religious Instruction in State Schools.
(e) Sunday Schools
(f) Coordination.
(g) training of teachers.
(h) All things incidental to the matters aforesaid"
