Established in 1943 and operating until around 1951, the movement was chaired by the Bishop of Armidale J.S. Moyes, and was intended to supplement the Social Questions Committee of the General Synod. A monthly magazine The New Day was produced, featuring articles on various social issues.

They had begun to form as a result of Howard Guinness' Australian tours in 1930 and 1933-4. The Sydney College of Divinity is a consortium of theological colleges. It was formed in 1983 with six member institutions, when the Bachelor of Theology course was accredited. The SCD was approved by the Commonwealth Government as a higher education provider in 2004.
