There have been Anglican clergy in Australia since the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, and the continent was initially part of the Dicoese of Calcutta until the formation of the Diocese of Australia in 1836 under Bishop W.G. Broughton. The church was constituted as an autonomous body in 1962 when the Constitution of the Church of England in Australia was drawn up. The name was changed to 'Anglican Church of Australia' in 1981. The church meets nationally every three years at the General Synod, with representatives from all 23 dioceses.

Some documents record the name as Broughton Vale. It is likely that the area was named after an Aboriginal guide named after the Bishop of Australia W.G. The Inter Varsity Fellowship in Australia formed in 1936 from a network of groups at universities around the country. They had begun to form as a result of Howard Guinness' Australian tours in 1930 and 1933-4. The Sydney College of Divinity is a consortium of theological colleges. It was formed in 1983 with six member institutions, when the Bachelor of Theology course was accredited. The SCD was approved by the Commonwealth Government as a higher education provider in 2004.
