Commonwealth Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Australia
The Commonwealth Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Australia was formed in 1925 and included representatives from all of the State Auxiliaries. The Council met annually and was chaired by a Commonwealth Secretary, who also represented the BFBS internationally and liaised with the United Bible Societies. In the 1970s the Council was working towards incorporation and the development of a Constitution, which they achieved in 1976 with the formation of the Bible Society in Australia. Notable Secretaries included Canon H.M. Arrowsmith (1903-1982) and Rev J.R. Payne.
O.W. Cooper studied at Moore College from 1929-1931 and graduated with the Th.L. in 1931. From 1936-1938 he served as Rector of St Martin's Church, Kensington. From 1941-1945 he also served as a chaplain with the AIF.
