Frederick James Selwood was born in Martock, Somerset, and married his first wife in Ampthill, Bedfordshire at the age of 24. They had 2 children, Rita (b. 1904) and Kenneth (b. 1910). He served as a missionary in Japan and married his second wife Dorothy on 26th June 1920. They moved to Australia in 1941 and Frederick served as the minister of St Phillip's Church in Cowes, Phillip Island. He also preached at other churches around Melbourne. He died on 4th November 1944 from stomach cancer and is buried in Bald Hills Cemetery.

Emily Norbury came out from England in 1937 and was ordained Deaconess in 1939. She held the offices of Principal of Deaconess House from 1938, and of Head Deaconess from 1939 until her death in 1944.

From 1859 to 1905 he was the rector of St Aldate's Church in Oxford. He was a prominent member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England.
