Inaugurated in 1891 in St Marys, Balmain. The name 'Bethany' was used in the early years but the official title was approximately The Church of England Deaconess Institution Sydney Limited. Incorporated as Anglican Deaconess Institution Limited (ADSIL) in 1996, the Institution adopted a CEO and a more corporate and independent constitution in 2008, and was renamed Anglican Deaconess Ministries Limited in 2011

An Inter-Diocesan Committee was formed in 1921 to prepare the way for a Council. The inaugural meeting of the Australian Central Council of the Mothers' Union in the British Empire was held on 12th May 1925 at Bishopscourt, Melbourne. In 1926 Mary Sumner House requested that the word Central be replaced by the word Commonwealth. In 1986 the decision was made to drop the word Commonwealth from the name. The Australian Council is the governing body of MU Australia. It meets every eighteen months and is made up of 40 members: the Executive Committee, the Diocesan Presidents and Life Vice Presidents.

The Diocesan Council is the governing body of the Sydney Diocesan Branch of the Mothers' Union in Australia. It is made up of the Executive Committee, the Life Vice Presidents, Branch and Area Presidents, Assistants to Heads of Departments, Delegates to other Organisations, Leaders of Caritas groups, Deanery Presidents, Principal of Deaconess House, Life members of the Council, Immediate Past President, the Diocesan Women's Ministry Coordinator and Australian Executive members from the Sydney Diocese.

The foundation stone of St Philip’s Caringbah was laid on 2nd July 1927, although services had been held in the Burns Hall since October 1924. The first Rector, Rev. Arthur Reeves, was appointed in 1933. As the church grew, so did various groups including the Mothers’ Union, Women’s Guild, GFS and CEBS. Caringbah became a provisional district in February 1957. A new church building, the War Memorial Church of St Philip, was opened by Archbishop Gough on 24th June 1961. On 8th August 1961 the church was granted a rise in status to that of Parish, without the intervening stage of Provisional Parish. A parish hall was constructed for the congregation at Taren Point in 1965. The Philippian parish paper was issued from 1967-1970, then re-introduced in 1977.

St John’s Church is a heritage-listed neo-gothic building which was opened in 1858. The spire was designed by Edmund Blacket and was added in 1871. In 1986 the parishes of Darlinghurst and East Sydney were merged to form the Parish of East Sydney with St John’s Darlinghurst and St Peter’s Woolloomooloo. St Peter’s was deconsecrated in 1993 and the building sold to SCEGGS Darlinghurst. The parish includes the 3rd wealthiest and 5th poorest suburbs in Sydney. St John’s Church operated a number of community outreach programs including PJ’s café & drop-in centre, and since 1996, Rough Edges safe space for homeless and disadvantaged people. East Sydney Community Services was sponsored by St John’s and ran the 118 AIDS hostel along with HMS Care Force from 1987 to 1990. The hostel provided accommodation and support services for people who were waiting for the results of their AIDS test.

Established in 1943 and operating until around 1951, the movement was chaired by the Bishop of Armidale J.S. Moyes, and was intended to supplement the Social Questions Committee of the General Synod. A monthly magazine The New Day was produced, featuring articles on various social issues.

There have been Anglican clergy in Australia since the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, and the continent was initially part of the Dicoese of Calcutta until the formation of the Diocese of Australia in 1836 under Bishop W.G. Broughton. The church was constituted as an autonomous body in 1962 when the Constitution of the Church of England in Australia was drawn up. The name was changed to 'Anglican Church of Australia' in 1981. The church meets nationally every three years at the General Synod, with representatives from all 23 dioceses.
