From 1859 to 1905 he was the rector of St Aldate's Church in Oxford. He was a prominent member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England.

Vernon Turner started 'The Sunshine Hour' in 1951, a half hour community hymn singing program, syndicated across various radio stations. A committee was formed to handle correspondence and donations. In 1953, the Sunshine Hour Committee was replaced by the Christian Broadcasting Association (CBA). From the 1950s to the 1970s it was the major supplier of Christian radio programs to commercial stations. CBA was awarded a ‘Special Interest’ licence in 1978, and launched Australia's first Christian radio station, 2CBA-FM Stereo 103, on 5th March 1979.
