Australian Council of Christians and Jews
The Council of Christians and Jews was first founded in Melbourne in 1985, then in Sydney in 1988. A national body was incorporated in 1991. Its aim is to promote interfaith dialogue between the Christian and Jewish communities in Australia.
Commonwealth Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Australia
The Commonwealth Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Australia was formed in 1925 and included representatives from all of the State Auxiliaries. The Council met annually and was chaired by a Commonwealth Secretary, who also represented the BFBS internationally and liaised with the United Bible Societies. In the 1970s the Council was working towards incorporation and the development of a Constitution, which they achieved in 1976 with the formation of the Bible Society in Australia. Notable Secretaries included Canon H.M. Arrowsmith (1903-1982) and Rev J.R. Payne.
The Translation and Text Division managed all Bible translation projects
The United Bible Societies is an international federation of national Bible societies. It was formed in 1946 by delegates from 13 countries, and now has 200 member societies worldwide. http://www.biblesociety.org/
Records of United Bible Societies are included in the Bible Society Australia archives collection because the Commonwealth/Australian Secretary J.R. Payne was a member of the UBS Executive Committee.
